Short Description

The common buzzard can be recognised by its comparatively short, rounded tail. A characteristic feature is its circling flight in thermals with widely extended wings, raised in the shape of a flat v. It is brown-white and seems quite compact in overall appearance.

In the city

Common buzzards make comparatively few demands on their habitats and can live in town in green spaces with some copses, such as e.g. parks. It feeds mainly on mice that it catches in these open spaces.

  • Common buzzards can often be seen near roads and motorways.

  • It feeds on mice and other small animals.

  • Common buzzards stay in Germany from the middle of March to the end of October. They spend the winter in southern Europe. However, many buzzards hibernate in Germany.

  • Courtship display flights include males gliding over the breeding territory in impressive sinus waves.
