Identifying a species
Which species can be identified with Naturblick?
With Naturblick you can identify plants and animal species. These include amphibians, bees, wild flowers, trees, reptiles, butterflies, mammals and birds. Here you can find the species list for sound recognition and the species list for image recognition. The selection of species is constantly being expanded. Help us select further species and species groups and write us an e-mail with your suggestions to naturblick@mfn.berlin.
Why does the result list of the identification keys always show so many species?
The results list of the identification keys is sorted by probability. All the characteristics you select are weighted equally. It is not always easy to select a characteristic correctly. Therefore, species are also displayed to which the selected characteristics only partially apply. You will therefore get the best results if you only select the characteristics that you are sure about.
How does pattern recognition work?
Pattern recognition always shows the three species with the closest match to the trained reference material. The closer the score is to 100%, the more similar the photo or sound recording is to the reference material of a species with which the pattern recognition was trained. This means that only species that have been trained can be recognized and the recognition works best if there is a great similarity to the recording situation and quality (e.g. microphone quality). Here you can find the species list for sound recognition and the species list for image recognition here.
Can I also identify photos that I did not take with the app?
You can use the field book to select photos of plants from your gallery and identify them using image recognition. To save the observation, we ask you to enter the time when you saw the plant. You can then add the location of your observation to the map in the field book.
Making observations
How can I save when I have seen an animal or plant?
Naturblick offers you various ways to save your observations. You can take a photo of a plant or record a bird song, have it automatically identified and then save it as an observation. You can also add an observation using the plus symbol in the species portraits or in the field book. On the details page of an observation, you can then change the location of the observation on the map and enter further details.
How can I transfer the data from my field book to my new cell phone?
With the Naturblick account, it is easy to display your observations on a new cell phone. All observations are saved across multiple mobile devices and are displayed on all connected devices.
What happens to my observations?
Your observations will be saved in your field book and in our database. All media made or imported with
Naturblick are licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0, which means that they may be reused. You can enter your name for
authorship in the settings, otherwise "MfN Naturblick" will be named as the author.
The joy of experiencing nature and the protection of our users is our top priority. Therefore, we do not share
observation data (species name, location, time, number, further details and notes) and media (including metadata
such as authorship) that have not been previously checked by us or explicitly agreed to be shared with a
specific project. We check whether personal data or copyright infringements are involved.
In addition, we
gradually review all observations to give you and other users the opportunity to assess whether the observations
are plausible. However, only the observer can really say which species he or she has seen. We can therefore only
give hints to take a closer look if necessary and pay attention to certain characteristics. You can find all
verified and plausible observations on the Naturblick
map.
Where can I see observations from other Naturblick users?
We only publish observations (species name, location, time, number, further details and notes) and media (including metadata such as authorship) that have not been checked by us beforehand. We gradually check all observations for plausibility and whether personal data or copyright infringements are present. All checked and plausible observations can be found on the Naturblick map.
Technology
How can I change the language in the app?
You can use Naturblick in German and in the English translation. The language is taken from the device settings and you can use it to change the language. You can find an explanation for Android here.
Why doesn't Naturblick work on my old Android phone?
Unfortunately, we are bound by the requirements of the Google Play Store. The regulations stipulate that all apps must be designed for newer Android versions in order to increase security for users. We very much regret this, but it is unavoidable when using the Play Store. We are considering the use of alternative app stores.
Is offline recognition planned?
We specialize in Urban nature and our users are primarily active in urban areas, where network coverage is typically available. This is why our online recognition function works very well. However, we are constantly working on improving our App and strive to develop offline recognition in the long run.
