Short Description

Skylarks are rather inconspicuously beige to reddish-brown with black-brown dashes. Characteristic features are the narrow white bands at the edges of the wings, visible when flying, and the song delivered in flight. They have a short blunt crest on the head, which can be raised.

In the city

The skylark is a field bird and not a typical town dweller. It requires wide open spaces. In an urban environment, it can thus be found on old airfields and similar areas.

Fun Facts

  • A skylark concert as can be heard at the Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin is a special experience of urban nature.

  • Skylarks can imitate the songs or calls of other species.

  • Skylarks are migratory birds that fly south at the end of October. They return to Germany in early March.
