Short Description

The characteristic feature of the hawfinch is its distinctive powerful bill. Hawfinches are reddish-brown to whitish with a dark-brown back, a grey nape band and a red-brown head.

In the city

Hawfinches can be found in parks, gardens and cemeteries rich in trees.

In winter, they visit man-made feeding sites.

  • The hawfinch is one of the largest indigenous finches with the most powerful bill.

  • It can be seen in Germany all year round.

  • As their powerful bills indicate, hawfinches feed mainly on berries and seeds. They can split the hard shells of beech nuts and cherry stones. Its English name refers to the red berries (haws) of the hawthorn.
