In the city
The Hairy Scoliid Wasp is mainly found in warmer areas. In the city, it therefore feels at home in particularly sunny places with lots of flowers.
Fun Facts
The flight period is from July to September.
The Hairy Scoliid Wasp is threatened with extinction, but the increasingly warmer climate in this country favours it and a small recovery of the population is being observed.
It should never be confused with the Yellow-legged Hornet, as this is considered an invasive species. This means that it poses a major threat to ecosystems. Sightings must be reported. In the event of a sighting, it is helpful to contact organisations such as the NABU Hymenoptera Service Berlin.
It prefers to visit blue flowers.
However, it feeds its offspring by paralysing them with a sting, usually jule beetles or rose chafer beetles. It then lays an egg on them. The larva slowly feeds on the infested beetle and gradually eats it.
