Short Description

The jackdaw is a medium-sized, grey-black member of the crow family. Especially compared to most other crows and rooks, it appears stocky. It has a thick powerful bill as well as comparatively short legs. A striking feature are its blue eyes.

Females are larger.

In the city

In an urban environment, jackdaws inhabit recesses in buildings and can often be observed around church spires. In recent years, they have become a more common sight at motorway bridges, service stations and in urban parks. Jackdaws also increasingly look for food in rubbish dumps. Building renovation results in the loss of nesting places and in some instances in decreasing populations.

Fun Facts

  • Because of their ability to imitate the human voice and because of their tameness, jackdaws were sometimes kept as caged birds. However, this is no longer permitted.

  • They are amongst the most intelligent birds and are highly teachable.

  • They are threatened with extinction in Berlin and can rarely be observed. Building restoration has resulted in a loss of nesting places.

  • Jackdaws generally hibernate in Germany. In harsh winters, eastern European populations migrate to central Europe.

  • Endangerment level Germany: not endangered
