Short Description

The quite rotund little bird has a short broad bill and white patches on its folded wings.

Males have a black head and black upper parts. The underparts and the striking forehead patch are white.

Females are light-brown with white underparts. They lack the white forehead patch.

In the city

The original forest bird can now often be seen in gardens, parks and cemeteries.

Pied flycatchers like to nest in nest boxes. They can be actively supported through the provision of suitable nesting facilities.

Fun Facts

  • Nest boxes offer an advantage in trying to attract a female. Females give preference to males in possession of such a nest box.

  • Males arriving early initially occupy more than one territory or several nest boxes and can thus attract two or three different females and establish a relationship with them.

  • Pied flycatchers are migratory birds that can be seen in Germany from the end of April to the end of August. They hibernate in tropical Africa.
