Short Description

Marsh tits have brown-grey upper parts and whitish underparts. A striking feature is its black cap extending downwards to the nape. Its cheeks are white and its throat black.

Similar species

Willow tit

Poecile montanus
Willow tits have a larger black chin patch. Their cap is matt black and the plumage of their bodies overall darker brown. On their closed wings, they have a white patch which the marsh tit does not have. However, the two species are difficult to tell apart. A good identifier is their respective song.

Blackcap

Sylvia atricapilla
The plumage of male blackcaps is more grey overall. Also, they do not have a lighter head plumage nor a black chin patch. Their cap is round.

In the city

Marsh tits can be seen in cemeteries, parks and gardens with old trees.

In winter, they like to visit bird feeders.

  • Marsh tits hibernate in Germany.

  • In contrast with other tits, marsh tits set up food stores. To that end, they hide mainly seeds and dead insects.
