Short Description

The three-nerved sandwort can grow up to 30 centimetres high.

The leaves are ovate and pointed at the tip. They have three, rarely five, clearly visible leaf veins and are dotted in transmitted light. They sit opposite each other on the stem.

The stem, which has short hairs all around, grows erect and branched.

The small flowers have five white petals. Between the petals are clearly longer, pointed, green leaves (sepals).

The fruits are roundish, brown capsules.

In the city

The three-nerved sandwort prefers locations in the shade with lime-free, loose, loamy soils. It is therefore often found in deciduous and coniferous forests, under bushes or along forest paths.

Fun Facts

  • When backlit, the leaves look translucent and dotted. This effect is caused by crystals of calcium oxalate and possibly serves as protection against feeding.

  • For dispersal by ants, the seeds have an oily and nutritious appendage.

  • The flowering period is from May to July.

  • After flowering in July, they usually wilt.

  • Endangerment level Germany: not endangered
  • The three-nerved sandwort is native to Germany and widespread in almost all of Europe.
