Short Description
Hairy tare is a tender climbing plant that can grow over half a metre high.
The leaves are small and narrow. They are flat or three-toothed at the tip.
The stem is thin and limp.
The small flowers are white, light purple or bluish. They grow in stalked racemes. They have only one mirror axis (mirror symmetry). The flower has five petals. The large upper petal protrudes upwards. The two lower petals form a hollow boat that surrounds the anthers and pistil.
The fruits are small, soft-haired legumes.

In the city
Hairy tare grows in fields and wastelands as well as along bushes and paths. It prefers warm, moderately dry clay soils. It occurs frequently, but is absent in harsh locations.
Fun Facts
The flowering period is from June to July.
The pods burst open in warm weather and the seeds they contain are ejected.
The flowers produce plenty of nectar, which is visible as drops through the thin-skinned petals. It is mainly visited by bees and butterflies.
It is an annual plant. This means the plant dies in the first year after the seeds have ripened.
