Short Description

White campion can grow up to 1.2 m tall.

The leaves grow in opposite pairs on the stem. They are generally oval and pointed.

The stem is branched from the base. Only two new branch stems grow at a time. The plant is densely covered in soft glandular hairs.

The flower consists of five white petals. White campion is generally dioecious. This means that only male or only female flowers are found on an individual plant. In male plants, small yellow anthers protrude, in female flowers white stigmas.

The fruit is an oval capsule with small “teeth” along the edge (denticidal capsule).

In the city

White campion can frequently be found in sites altered through human activity, such as fallow land and along verges of paths. It prefers light and sunny sites with nutrient-rich loamy soil.

  • It is a typical plant to attract nocturnal moths. Its flowers only open towards evening time and emit a strong scent in order to be pollinated by moths.

  • It flowers from June to September.

    White campion roots were formerly used to make soap for washing, because they contain a soap-like compound (saponin).
