Short Description
The common figwort can grow up to one metre high.
The leaves are opposite each other on the stem. They are heart-shaped to oval and long pointed. The leaf margin is double serrated.
The stem is erect and square.
The flowers are arranged in a loose inflorescence. The individual flowers are greenish to reddish brown. They have an upper and a lower lip.
The fruits are cone-shaped capsules.

The common figwort is quite common in urban forests. It prefers shady and moist habitats.

The flowering period is from June to July.
Common figwort is a perennial plant. It grows older than two years, but flowers only once and dies after the seeds have ripened.

The common figwort is native to Europe, Asia and North America.
In folk medicine it is used, among other things, against skin complaints and for wound healing.
