Short Description

The common figwort can grow up to one metre high.

The leaves are opposite each other on the stem. They are heart-shaped to oval and long pointed. The leaf margin is double serrated.

The stem is erect and square.

The flowers are arranged in a loose inflorescence. The individual flowers are greenish to reddish brown. They have an upper and a lower lip.

The fruits are cone-shaped capsules.

In the city

The common figwort is quite common in urban forests. It prefers shady and moist habitats.

  • The flowering period is from June to July.

  • Common figwort is a perennial plant. It grows older than two years, but flowers only once and dies after the seeds have ripened.

  • The common figwort is native to Europe, Asia and North America.

  • In folk medicine it is used, among other things, against skin complaints and for wound healing.
