In the city

The eagle owl adapts to different conditions and is found in almost treeless desert mountains and steppes as well as in sparse coniferous forests, subtropical areas and on seashores. Its ideal hunting ground is rich in structures and interspersed with hedges, water bodies, woods and fields. For breeding, it nests mainly in rock faces and niches. Well-suited breeding sites are often occupied for generations.

Fun Facts

  • The eagle owl is a nocturnal hunter. Its diet includes ground-dwelling mammals such as mice and rats and birds such as pigeons, ravens and crows. Squeaker, young foxes and fawns are also part of their diet.

  • The indigestible components such as hair, feathers and bones are regurgitated in pellets.

  • The eagle owl has no natural enemies. The main causes of its endangerment are accidents on power lines and in rail and road traffic and disturbances at its breeding sites.

  • Endangerment level Germany: not endangered
