Short Description

The tulip tree is deciduous and can grow up to 40 m tall.

Its almost square leaves can be recognised by the characteristic four lobes at the end of the leaf and the saddle-shaped indentations between the lobes. The leaves grow alternately on the branch and have a smooth margin.

The bark is orange-brown with even, web-like furrows.

The large, greenish-yellow, tulip-like flowers are very distinctive.

The fruit is cone-shaped. It consists of many small, winged seeds, arranged like roof tiles. It is green to start with and later turns brown.

In the city

Tulip trees are frequently found in parks and also in gardens as ornamental trees. They prefer sunny to semi-shaded and fresh to moist locations.

  • The tulip tree originates from North America. It is a non-native plant (neophyte).

  • The entire plant, but particularly the wood and bark are mildly poisonous. The sap can cause allergic reactions.
