In the city

Wrens live in parks, gardens and cemeteries that are rich in structures.

In cemeteries, it can often be spotted singing perched on gravestones or wall ledges. But its loud song may also attract attention along rivers and streams.

Fun Facts

  • Next to goldcrest and firecrest, the wren is the third smallest native bird.

  • Its song can reach a volume of up to 90 decibels. That is louder than road noise in heavy traffic.

  • Because it sings loudly in winter, too, it is also known as the snowbird.

  • From February to July, wrens start to sing approx. 40 minutes before sunrise.

  • Wrens have the reputation of being clever and cunning. This is how an old fable tells that it became the king of the animals.

  • It can be seen all year round in Central Europe.

  • Endangerment level Germany: not endangered
