Short Description

The Japanese larch is a coniferous tree that grows up to 30 metres high in Europe. It sheds its needles in autumn.

The bluish green needles stand together in bundles of 40 to 50 needles. They are very narrow and soft.

The bark is dark reddish brown and has fine longitudinal cracks.

There are male and female flower cones. The male flower cones are yellow and egg-shaped. They face downwards towards the ground. The female flower cones are larger, yellow-green to purple and face upwards.

The mature cones are brown and three to four centimetres long. The cone scales are bent over at the edge.

In the city

The Japanese larch preferably grows in sunny sites with high humidity. It is very tolerant of high rainfall and strong winds and is therefore often planted as a forest tree. In the city, it can also be found as an ornamental tree in parks.

Especially in its country of origin, Japan, it is very popular as a bonsai.

Fun Facts

  • The flowering time is in March.

  • It has a heart-shaped root system and thus combines the advantages of roots that are close to the surface and those that reach very deep into the soil.

  • After seed ripening, the cones usually remain on the tree for many years. Japanese larches therefore often bear a lot of cones.

  • It is particularly popular with rare lichens such as beard lichens (Usnea).

  • Endangerment level Germany: not evaluated
