Short Description

The bearded reedling is small, light yellow-brown and has a long, light yellow-brown tail.

The male's head is light blue-grey with a long, black beard stripe and a white throat.

The head of the female is beige brown without a black beard. The throat is dirty white.

The young birds are yellow-beige and have black areas in the tail.

In the city

They prefer to colonise reed beds. They need large areas with old reeds in order to settle permanently. They place their nest at the bottom of the reed bed near the water and rarely visit bushes.

Fun Facts

  • In Europe, it is the only representative of a family that is mainly native to tropical regions. It is not closely related to the actual tits.

  • They breed twice a year.

  • While still in juvenile plumage, the birds pair up and often stay together for several years or even for their entire lives.

  • They eat insects and spiders in summer and plant seeds in winter.

  • Often there are drastic population changes. After harsh winters, entire populations may die out.
