Short Description
Fumewort can grow to a height of 20 cm.
The leaves are solitary and alternate on the stem (pinnate). The leaves are doubly ternate. There is a long scale at the base of the plant.
The stem is upright and not branched.
The flowers have a single mirror axis (zygomorphic) and generally have purple petals fused to a tube. They are clustered in a raceme. The spur is straight and about the same length as the rest of the flower.
The fruits are longish capsules.

In the city
In town, fumewort can be found in beech woods and shrubberies rich in herbs. It prefers fresh, shaded sites with nutrient-rich soils.

It is an important food plant for the caterpillars of the clouded Apollo butterfly.
It flowers from March to April.
It lives for several years and generally flowers and fruits annually (perennial plant).
